LESSON 9

In 1985, Petra was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been described as “one of the world’s most valuable cultural sites.” In 2007, it was also named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. About one million people visit Petra every year.

Recently, researchers have been learning more about this lost city. In 2016, by using satellite images, they discovered a giant stone platform just below the sandy ground. Although it was less than a kilometer from the main city, they had missed it. What it was used for is still unknown.

It is said that 85 percent of the city is underground and untouched. We have entered a new age in archaeology with the help of advanced technologies. They could probably solve the mysteries and secrets of Petra someday.
