LESSON 9

In August 1812, Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt stood at the entrance to a canyon in a desert in the Middle East. He found his way along the rocky floor through a long canyon. When he finally came out in the open air, he could not believe his eyes. A high rose-red wall where a magnificent structure was sculpted was rising up above him.

Burckhardt knew he had found Petra. It was the mysterious lost city he had heard about during his travels. He was the first European to enter the city in many centuries.

In 1989, some 180 years after Burckhardt’s rediscovery, the ancient city became known around the world when it was featured in the entertaining movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
