LESSON 7

Another concern about marine plastic is its health hazard to all living things, including us. As it floats, marine plastic breaks down into tiny particles. These small pieces are called microplastics. They are less than five millimeters across.

Although microplastics are very small, they can have a big impact on marine species. Small fish eat microplastics. Then bigger fish eat the small fish, and then some seabirds and other animals eat the bigger fish. What will happen if we eat those fish polluted with microplastics?

Moreover, toxic substances can easily attach to microplastics. Naturally, marine species take in those microplastics with polluted substances. This shows us that microplastics can easily enter the food chain and change the entire marine ecosystem for the worse.
