LESSON 3

When you go to a temple or a shrine, you can buy a lucky charm (an omamori). See the picture on the left below. Each lucky charm has a knot on it. The tying style of the knot has a special meaning: a wish comes true.

This time, look at the picture on the right. It is showing two different tying styles of mizuhiki. They have opposite meanings: a wish for a once-in-a-lifetime event, such as marriage and illness recovery, and a wish for a repeated celebration, such as school admission and long life.

Ties and knots express our hopes, dreams, and inner feelings. The spirit of musubi is still strong and alive.
