LESSON 3

In ancient times, people developed practical tying skills and applied them to activities such as hunting, fishing, and building houses. These skills made their lives more convenient and efficient. Even today, we use them when we tie shoelaces, packages, old newspapers, and so on.

Some of the practical tying skills evolved into professional ones. The skills for lifesaving, firefighting, and climbing are some examples.

In addition, there was a different trend in Japan. People tried to express gratitude and respect through the styles of tying. As time went by, the various tying styles came to hold special meanings besides their practical functions.
