Cats and dogs are common as pets in Japan. According to a recent survey, there are 16 million pet cats and dogs in Japan. About one in five Japanese families has a cat or a dog.
Humans began to have dogs over 14,000 years ago. They were our good partners for hunting, protection, and friendship. Cats, on the other hand, are relatively new to us. They became pets around 4,000 years ago.
Many Japanese pet owners once kept their animals outside. Dogs acted as guard dogs, and cats were very helpful as rat hunters.
